Said C. Naciri: the Moroccan Tarantino

Said C. Naciri is the fresh face of a revolutionary film movement in Morocco. Having arrived in Marrakech at the age of 14, this young director spread his wings to the United States where he studied production and direction at the Los Angeles Film School. After a few years, Said Naciri decided to return to his adopted city to shoot his debut feature film: Kanyamakan, an action movie that rivals Hollywood productions, hitting theaters Wednesday, March 12.

Made in Marrakech: Part of the film was shot in Marrakech, why this choice?

Said C. Naciri: Kanyamakan starts and ends in Marrakech. The first scene takes place at the iconic Jemaa el Fna Square, a naturally cinematic venue that adds a mystical touch to the film. We also involved acrobats performing on the square, who underwent intensive training for a year. The film includes 600 special effects shots, featuring high-end chases orchestrated by the world-renowned Julienne family of stunt performers, who have managed chase scenes in “James Bond” and other Hollywood blockbusters.

Made in Marrakech: What were your criteria for casting?

Said C. Naciri: We needed faces that resonate with Moroccans, it's challenging to find actors who can blend action with acting. Mohammed El Achi, the lead actor who is also the fight choreographer, has worked with director Luc Besson, and the team from “The Incredible Hulk”. We also have Affif Ben Badra, an actor and stuntman who appeared in “Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows” and “Unleashed”.

Made in Marrakech: Can you be seen as the pioneer of a new genre in Moroccan cinema?

Said C. Naciri: I've often heard this comment, especially after screenings at the Marrakech International Film Festival and the Tangier Festival. The feedback described the movie as a “new breath” for local cinema. I don't claim to be a pioneer, but I'm convinced that Kanyamakan is a new direction for Moroccan cinema.

Made in Marrakech: Why is it essential to watch your film?

Said C. Naciri: It's a must-see because I believe this film breaks new ground in Moroccan cinema and shatters what has been done over the past fifty years in the national cinema scene. It’s an adventure and action movie, the first of its kind in Morocco, aimed at a broad audience without age restrictions.

Made in Marrakech: What comes after Kanyamakan?

Said C. Naciri: I've begun writing the next film, it's still under construction, but the ideas are taking shape day by day, keep your eyes peeled!
